Focus question: How does an author slow down and speed up a life story so readers can feel the importance of each moment? In Honeybee: The Busy Life of Apis Mellifera by Candace Fleming, readers follow one honeybee from egg to adult as she grows, works, and helps her hive survive. The pacing stretches important moments like hatching, cleaning, nursing, guarding, and flying, while quick shifts in time show how a bee’s busy life moves fast and with purpose.

Element	How to notice or teach it in the novel
Pace	Read: Notice how Candace Fleming moves quickly through the honeybee’s life cycle but slows down key jobs in the hive, like when Apis hatches, cleans cells, tends larvae, guards the hive, and finally flies out to forage. Classroom Activity: Write 4-5 sentences about one animal’s day, making one moment slow and detailed and the other moments fast.
Plot	Read: Track the sequence of Apis Mellifera’s life from egg to larva to pupa to worker bee, showing how each new task builds the story. Classroom Activity: Create a beginning-middle-end plot map for Apis’s life, then write a short life-cycle story of another creature using the same structure.
Prosody	Read: Listen to the way the text sounds aloud, with short dramatic lines and flowing scientific narration that match the movement of the hive. Classroom Activity: Choose 3 lines about Apis and practice reading them with expression, then write 3 lines of your own that sound smooth, busy, or urgent.
Word pause	Read: Notice where single words or very short phrases create a stop, helping readers pay attention to danger, change, or action in Apis’s life. Classroom Activity: Write a short paragraph about an insect and add 3 one-word pauses for emphasis.
Concept	Read: Think about the big idea that one tiny honeybee’s work matters to the whole hive and to the world of flowers, fruit, and people. Classroom Activity: Write 2-3 sentences explaining how one small action in nature can make a big difference.
Voice & World View	Read: Notice how the book blends factual information with a dramatic, close-up voice that treats the honeybee’s life as important, urgent, and connected to nature. Classroom Activity: Write a nature paragraph in a serious, admiring voice about an animal doing important work.
Setting & Place	Read: Study how the hive, honeycomb cells, entrance, and flowering world outside create different spaces for Apis’s changing jobs. Classroom Activity: Write about two places an animal moves through, showing how each place changes what the animal does.
Point of View	Read: Notice that the book follows Apis closely, almost like readers are beside her, even though it is written as nonfiction. Classroom Activity: Rewrite one hive event from the point of view of Apis using 'I' statements.
Original Characters	Read: Even in a factual text, Apis feels like a distinct central character, while queen, nurse bees, guards, drones, and larvae each have clear roles. Classroom Activity: Invent a worker animal character and list 3 jobs that make that character memorable.
Dialogue	Read: Notice that the story does not rely on spoken dialogue, so actions, word choice, and structure must carry the drama. Classroom Activity: Write a short scene from the hive with imagined dialogue between Apis and another bee while keeping the facts true.
Details	Read: Pay attention to the precise facts about wax cells, pollen, nectar, larvae, wings, stingers, and the many jobs inside the hive. Classroom Activity: Write 5 factual details about an animal and turn them into a vivid paragraph.
Descriptions	Read: Notice how the descriptions help readers picture fuzzy bodies, dark cells, crowded hive spaces, and flower-filled outdoor scenes. Classroom Activity: Describe a small creature using sight, sound, and movement details.
Strong First Lines	Read: Look at how the opening immediately places readers inside the tiny, fragile beginning of Apis’s life, creating curiosity. Classroom Activity: Write 3 possible first lines for an animal life story that make readers want to know what happens next.
Immediacy & Engagement	Read: Notice how the present-tense feel and close attention to Apis’s body and tasks make her life seem urgent and happening right now. Classroom Activity: Write 4 sentences in a 'right now' style about an animal facing an important job.
Story Scenes & Summaries & Unique Structures	Read: Notice how some parts feel like zoomed-in scenes, such as hatching or guarding, while other parts summarize days of hive work quickly. Classroom Activity: Write one detailed scene and one quick summary about the same animal’s life.
Flashback & Flash Forward & Cliffhangers	Read: Notice that the book mostly moves forward in time, but each stage creates anticipation for the next change in Apis’s life. Classroom Activity: End a paragraph with a cliffhanger sentence about what your animal will do next.
Tension & Suspense & Surprise	Read: Pay attention to moments of danger and risk, such as threats outside the hive and the hard work Apis must survive to do. Classroom Activity: Write 3 suspenseful sentences about a small creature in danger, saving the biggest reveal for last.
Page Turns and Chapter Breaks	Read: Think about how page turns in a picture book help reveal new life stages, new jobs, and surprising facts about honeybees. Classroom Activity: Plan a 4-page mini-book and decide what information or action to hide until the page turn.
Performance	Read: Notice how this text invites dramatic read-aloud performance through changes in volume, speed, and pauses during intense or quiet moments in Apis’s life. Classroom Activity: Mark a short section with arrows for where to slow down, speed up, whisper, or pause, then perform it.
Personality	Read: Even though Apis is a real honeybee, the writing helps readers sense her as hardworking, purposeful, and brave. Classroom Activity: Write a character sketch of a real animal, giving it personality through actions instead of opinions.
Humor	Read: Notice that the tone is mostly serious and awe-filled, not silly, because the book wants readers to respect the honeybee’s work. Classroom Activity: Write two versions of the same animal scene—one serious like Honeybee and one playful—and compare the effect.
Pause	Read: Notice how the text creates pauses before major changes, helping readers absorb what Apis has done and what comes next. Classroom Activity: Write a short paragraph and add dashes or line breaks to create a pause before the most important action.
Poetry and Poetic Devices	Read: Listen for poetic language, vivid imagery, and musical phrasing that make factual information about Apis sound beautiful and powerful. Classroom Activity: Write 3 poetic lines about a pollinator using imagery or alliteration.
Repetition	Read: Notice how repeated ideas about work, growth, and survival help unify Apis’s journey and remind readers that every job matters. Classroom Activity: Write a paragraph that repeats one key phrase about your topic 3 times for emphasis.
Rhythm	Read: Hear the rhythm created by short and long sentences as Apis moves from quiet cell life to the buzzing motion of the hive and fields. Classroom Activity: Write one sentence with a slow rhythm and one with a quick rhythm about the same event.
Punctuation	Read: Notice how punctuation helps control pacing, with commas, periods, and other marks guiding readers through moments of waiting, action, and danger. Classroom Activity: Rewrite a simple animal paragraph twice, changing punctuation to make one version calm and one version urgent.
Questions	Read: Think of the questions this book makes readers ask: How does a tiny bee know its job? Why are bees so important to flowers and people? Classroom Activity: Write 3 questions a reader might ask during a nonfiction animal story, then answer one in a complete sentence.
Compare-Contrast	Read: Compare life inside the hive with life outside among flowers, or compare the queen’s role with Apis’s worker jobs. Classroom Activity: Write 4 sentences comparing two roles in a bee colony or two animal habitats.
Objects	Read: Notice how important objects and materials—wax cells, pollen baskets, nectar, wings, stinger, and flowers—help move the story forward. Classroom Activity: Choose 3 important objects from an animal’s life and explain how each helps the animal survive.
Threes	Read: Look for places where ideas can be grouped in threes, such as three stages, three jobs, or three traits that describe Apis’s life and work. Classroom Activity: Write a sentence that lists three actions your animal does in order.
Whitespace & Negative Space	Read: Study how open space on the pages can slow readers down and make the tiny bee or a key fact stand out. Classroom Activity: Create a one-page layout for a short animal text, deciding where to leave empty space for emphasis.
Art & Graphics	Read: Notice how the illustrations support pacing by zooming in on Apis, showing hive structures, and helping readers understand scale and action. Classroom Activity: Draw one labeled picture to match a sentence you wrote about an animal’s work.
Interactives & Gamification	Read: Think about how readers could interact with Apis’s life story by sequencing her jobs or matching bee roles to actions in the hive. Classroom Activity: Make 5 event cards from Apis’s life cycle and put them in order, then write one sentence for each card.

Pace-Write It!

20-Minute Classroom Flow\nRead (5 min): Read aloud a section of Honeybee: The Busy Life of Apis Mellifera that shows Apis changing from one stage or job to another, such as hatching, nursing, guarding, or foraging. Ask students to listen for places where the story slows down and speeds up.\nNotice (5 min): Chart two columns: 'Slow and detailed' and 'Fast and quick.' Have students name examples from Apis’s life, such as a detailed moment inside the hive and a quicker summary of growing or working. Discuss how pacing helps readers understand that a bee’s life is both busy and important.\nWrite (7 min): Students write a short nonfiction-inspired animal paragraph using this frame: 'First, ___ was ___. Then, ___ changed. Slowly, ___ because ___. Soon, ___ . At last, ___ helped ___.' Encourage students to zoom in on one important moment and move quickly through the others.\nShare (3 min): Partners read their paragraphs aloud and point to the sentence where they slowed the pacing and the sentence where they sped it up. Invite 1-2 students to share how their pacing choices helped the reader.\nExit ticket: Write one sentence answering: 'Why did Candace Fleming slow down some parts of Apis’s life and speed up other parts?'
