Front Desk

by Kelly Yang

Ten-year-old Mia Tang manages the front desk of a motel while her parents clean rooms, navigating poverty, prejudice, and big dreams.

Big Idea

Writing can be a tool for justice, and standing up for others — even when you're scared — is how change begins.

Discussion Questions

1.How does Mia use writing to solve problems?
2.What challenges does Mia's family face at the motel?
3.How does Mia help the immigrants her parents hide?
4.What does Mia learn about speaking up?
5.How does the first-person voice pull you in?

Lesson Plan

⏱ 60 minutes, following reading of the novel or selected excerpts📦 Copies of Front Desk or selected excerpts, paper or notebooks, pencils, chart paper or a whiteboard, markers

Learning Goals

Explain how Mia Tang responds to poverty, prejudice, and challenges at the motel, using details from Front Desk.
Write three first-person journal entries that reflect Mia’s perspective, feelings, and hopes.
Connect a problem, an emotional response, and a small action in each journal entry.
Describe how writing and standing up for others can help Mia challenge unfair treatment.

Activity Steps

1.Review selected scenes from Front Desk involving Mia’s front-desk responsibilities, her family’s financial struggles, or unfair treatment of motel guests. Discuss: What does Mia notice, how does she feel, and what choices does she have?
2.Create a class chart with three columns: Motel Problem, Mia’s Feelings, and Small Action. Add examples supported by the book, such as helping a guest or using writing to speak up against unfairness.
3.Choose three different motel situations from the book. For each, plan a journal entry that includes the problem, Mia’s feelings, and one small action she takes. Distinguish details from the novel from imagined thoughts that fit her character.
4.Write three entries beginning with “Dear Journal” and using “I” as Mia. Aim for 4–6 sentences per entry in grades 3–4 or 6–8 sentences in grades 5–6. Include at least one accurate book detail in each entry and show writing as a tool for justice in at least one.
5.Exchange journals with a partner. Check that each entry sounds like Mia, includes all three required elements, and treats people facing poverty or prejudice respectfully. Revise one entry using the feedback.
6.Invite volunteers to share an entry. Finish with a brief reflection: How can a small, brave action—or a piece of writing—begin to change an unfair situation?

Focus question: How does an author speed up or slow down a story to help readers feel a character’s struggles, hopes, and courage? In Front Desk by Kelly Yang, Mia Tang tells the story of helping her family run a motel while facing poverty, racism, and big responsibilities. Yang uses pacing to move quickly through busy motel days, then slow down for important moments of fear, unfairness, humor, and hope so readers can deeply feel Mia’s world.

Element	How to notice or teach it in the novel
Pace	Read: Notice how Kelly Yang speeds through Mia’s many daily jobs at the Calivista Motel but slows down during key moments with Mr. Yao, the weekly letters, and scenes of injustice. Classroom Activity: Write a short scene about a busy day at a place you know, using 3 fast sentences for the rush and 3 slower sentences for one important moment.
Plot	Read: Track how Mia’s problems build from helping at the front desk to protecting immigrant families, dealing with Mr. Yao’s cruelty, and chasing her dream of becoming a writer. Classroom Activity: Make a 5-part plot ladder for Mia’s story, then draft your own character’s problem, rising action, turning point, and hopeful ending.
Prosody	Read: Listen to the flow of Mia’s voice when she explains motel life, worries about money, or describes unfair treatment; her sentences often sound energetic, honest, and emotional. Classroom Activity: Read one Mia-like paragraph aloud and revise it so the sentence flow matches either panic, excitement, or relief.
Word pause	Read: Notice where a powerful word or short phrase makes you stop, such as when Mia faces prejudice, shame, or sudden hope. Classroom Activity: Write 6 sentences about a hard moment, placing a one- or two-word sentence in the middle for emphasis.
Concept	Read: Notice how the big ideas of immigration, poverty, justice, and belonging unfold through everyday motel work instead of long explanations. Classroom Activity: Write a paragraph showing a big issue through a child’s daily job or responsibility rather than directly naming the issue at first.
Voice & World View	Read: Notice Mia’s hopeful, observant, and sometimes anxious worldview; she sees unfairness clearly but still believes people can help one another. Classroom Activity: Write a first-person paragraph in which a child narrator notices something unfair and responds with both worry and hope.
Setting & Place	Read: Study how the Calivista Motel becomes more than a backdrop—it is where families hide, work, struggle, and dream. Classroom Activity: Describe a setting like Mia’s motel from the point of view of a child who knows every hallway, room, and secret.
Point of View	Read: Notice how Mia’s first-person point of view lets readers understand confusing adult problems—money, jobs, immigration, racism—through a ten-year-old’s mind. Classroom Activity: Rewrite a small event from Mia’s life from the point of view of her mother or Hank, then compare what changes.
Original Characters	Read: Notice how characters like Mia, her hardworking parents, kind Hank, and harsh Mr. Yao feel distinct because of their choices, worries, and speech. Classroom Activity: Invent an original side character who could live at the motel and write 4 details that reveal the character without directly saying their personality.
Dialogue	Read: Notice how dialogue in Front Desk reveals power, kindness, fear, and cultural differences, especially in conversations with Mia’s parents, Hank, and Mr. Yao. Classroom Activity: Write a dialogue-only scene between a child and a strict adult where the reader can tell who has power without any narration.
Details	Read: Notice how specific details about cleaning rooms, managing the desk, counting money, and helping motel residents make Mia’s life believable. Classroom Activity: List 8 small details from a workplace or home routine, then use at least 5 in a realistic paragraph.
Descriptions	Read: Notice that Kelly Yang’s descriptions are clear and purposeful, helping readers picture the motel and feel Mia’s stress without slowing the story too much. Classroom Activity: Write a description of a cramped or busy place in 5 sentences, making every detail reveal mood.
Strong First Lines	Read: Notice how the opening quickly introduces Mia’s unusual job and pulls readers into her world right away. Classroom Activity: Write 3 possible first lines for a story about a child with a surprising responsibility, and make one line create instant curiosity.
Immediacy & Engagement	Read: Notice how readers are pulled in because Mia faces urgent problems right away—guests, rules, lies, money, and unfair treatment all feel immediate. Classroom Activity: Write an opening paragraph where the main character is already in the middle of solving a problem.
Story Scenes & Summaries & Unique Structures	Read: Notice how the novel balances scene-by-scene action at the motel with summary that moves time forward, and how Mia’s letters add a special structure. Classroom Activity: Write one full scene from a child’s day and then a 3-sentence summary of the rest of the week, ending with a short letter entry.
Flashback & Flash Forward & Cliffhangers	Read: Notice when Mia refers to earlier family struggles or ends a chapter with a worry that makes you want to keep reading. Classroom Activity: Write a paragraph in the present, add a brief flashback sentence, and end with a cliffhanger question or surprise.
Tension & Suspense & Surprise	Read: Notice how tension grows when Mia hides people, fears Mr. Yao, or risks making a mistake at the front desk, and how surprises change what she understands about others. Classroom Activity: Write a suspenseful motel-style scene in which a child must keep a secret from an adult who could ruin everything.
Page Turns and Chapter Breaks	Read: Notice how chapter endings often leave Mia with a problem, discovery, or emotional question that makes readers turn the page. Classroom Activity: Draft a mini-chapter of 8-10 sentences and end with a line that would make someone want to keep reading.
Performance	Read: Notice how Mia sometimes has to perform confidence at the desk even when she feels scared or uncertain inside. Classroom Activity: Write a scene where a child acts brave in public but reveals true feelings in one private sentence.
Personality	Read: Notice Mia’s personality—funny, determined, observant, caring, and ambitious—shapes the speed and feel of the story. Classroom Activity: Write a character sketch of a child whose strong personality changes how readers experience an ordinary day.
Humor	Read: Notice how humor appears even in difficult situations, often through Mia’s observations, awkward moments, or the strange realities of motel life. Classroom Activity: Write 5 lines about a stressful job or chore, adding one funny observation to lighten the tone.
Pause	Read: Notice where the story pauses for Mia to reflect on writing, friendship, belonging, or fairness, giving readers time to think. Classroom Activity: Add a reflective pause to the middle of an action scene by inserting 2 sentences of thought from the narrator.
Poetry and Poetic Devices	Read: Notice that even in prose, Kelly Yang uses vivid comparisons and emotionally strong language to help readers feel Mia’s hopes and fears. Classroom Activity: Write 4 sentences about a motel hallway or front desk using one simile and one example of personification.
Repetition	Read: Notice how repeated worries—money, hiding families, Mr. Yao, and Mia’s writing dream—build emotional rhythm across the story. Classroom Activity: Write a paragraph that repeats one important phrase 3 times to show a character’s fear or determination.
Rhythm	Read: Notice how short sentences can speed up stressful moments, while longer sentences can slow down Mia’s thinking and reflection. Classroom Activity: Write one fast paragraph with mostly short sentences and one slow paragraph with longer sentences about the same event.
Punctuation	Read: Notice how punctuation such as dashes, commas, and exclamation points helps shape Mia’s energetic voice and the urgency of motel life. Classroom Activity: Revise a plain paragraph by changing punctuation to create either excitement, panic, or relief.
Questions	Read: Notice how Mia wonders about people’s motives, her family’s future, and what is fair, and these questions keep readers emotionally engaged. Classroom Activity: Write a paragraph that includes 3 questions a child narrator asks while facing a difficult problem.
Compare-Contrast	Read: Notice the contrasts between rich and poor, safe and unsafe, kind and cruel, and how Mia compares herself with other children and families. Classroom Activity: Write a compare-contrast paragraph about two kids living very different lives in the same town.
Objects	Read: Notice how ordinary objects at the motel—keys, desks, rooms, letters, cleaning supplies—carry emotional and story importance. Classroom Activity: Choose one object from a workplace or home and write a paragraph showing how it represents a family struggle or dream.
Threes	Read: Notice how ideas often become stronger when grouped, such as Mia’s responsibilities, worries, or hopes. Classroom Activity: Write a sentence set that lists 3 jobs, 3 fears, and 3 dreams for a child character.
Whitespace & Negative Space	Read: Notice how chapter breaks and short paragraphing give readers space after intense moments with Mr. Yao, family stress, or hard truths. Classroom Activity: Rewrite a dense paragraph into shorter paragraphs so the most important line stands alone.
Art & Graphics	Read: Notice that Front Desk relies on words rather than pictures, so readers must build the motel, the front desk, and the characters in their minds. Classroom Activity: Create a labeled sketch of the Calivista Motel from Mia’s point of view, then write a paragraph explaining one important location.
Interactives & Gamification	Read: Notice how readers can track Mia’s challenges almost like missions: help a guest, avoid Mr. Yao’s anger, protect a family, improve writing, and hold onto hope. Classroom Activity: Turn Mia’s story into a 5-level challenge map and then design your own character’s ‘missions’ for a social justice story.

Pace-Write It!

20-Minute Classroom Flow Read (5 min): Read aloud a short excerpt from Front Desk that shows Mia juggling front desk work and family pressure. Ask students to listen for where the story feels fast and where it slows down. Notice (5 min): As a class, name the craft moves Kelly Yang uses: short sentences during stress, dialogue to raise tension, reflective pauses, and chapter-style endings that make readers want more. Chart two columns: ‘Fast Pace’ and ‘Slow Pace,’ using examples connected to Mia, her parents, Hank, and Mr. Yao. Write (7 min): Students write their own scene about a child handling a big responsibility while facing an unfair situation. Writing frame: ‘I was supposed to ____, but before I could, ____. First, ____. Then, ____. I tried to act ____ even though I felt ____. When ____ happened, everything slowed down. I noticed ____. I thought, “____.” Now I had to ____.’ Encourage students to use at least one short sentence, one dialogue line, and one reflective pause. Share (3 min): Partners read their scenes aloud and identify one place where the pace speeds up and one place where it slows down. Invite 1-2 students to share how they used pacing to show emotion. Exit ticket: In one or two sentences, answer: ‘How does slowing down one moment help a reader better understand a character’s feelings or an unfair situation?’
